Azure Abyss

You are Indigo Pilfer, a scientist forced down into the abyss by his boss to find the secrets of what lies below. Use your weapon to combine elements in order to defeat the monsters in the abyss, your wits to navigate around the interwoven cave systems, and your bravery to make it to the bottom and perhaps you’ll make it out alive.

Azure Abyss was a project created by me and 9 other members of Falmouth University for our module in the second year.  The game stemmed from a world pitch I created and from that we developed a unique interesting game that has a meld of genres to create a unique experience. We had around 6 months of development for this project.

The gameplay consists of a unique amalgamation of fps and turn-based combat, conceived by me and then developed by our designers. Outside of combat, the game would behave like a first-person shooter with the player being able to fire a gun, run, jump, sneak and interact with objects or characters. However, when the player fires their gun and hits an enemy, the game transitions into a turn-based system, where the player gets the first move. If the player is attacked by the enemy first, however, they do not begin combat first. The player is able to combine 4 different elements to create a unique bullet that has special effects. Whether the bullet deals extra damage, lowers the enemy's defence or deals damage over time, the player can create a unique output that can benefit any combat encounter. There is also a unique dialogue system that allows the player to interact with NPCs talk and obtain quests.
